Birth Doula

Do you feel you could benefit from having another person supporting you through labour & birth to offer emotional and practical help?

Or perhaps it is a supportive person more for your partner, to help them feel more at ease, confident and better able to support you in the way you need.

If you desire a more peaceful and empowering birthing experience, then perhaps a Birth Doula is a perfect addition to your birth team.

What makes investing in a Birth Doula worthwhile?

In my experience, both the mother and her birth partner can benefit from the reassuring presence of a Birth Doula. Having witnessed numerous births and being a Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner, I am familiar with birth and possess a deep understanding of the natural birthing process. These qualities enable me to create of an emotionally safe environment for the birthing parents. This contributes to the birthing mother progressing more quickly and confidently, often allowing the parents to remain at home for an extended period, thereby reducing the time spent labouring in the hospital. While a birthing woman is undeniably strong, she is also vulnerable and influenced by those around her. A supportive birth team plays a crucial role in enhancing the birthing woman’s confidence, consistently reinforcing her capability, and unwaveringly support throughout the entire birthing process.

As a Birth Doula, I not only offer emotional support but also provide practical assistance to enhance the birthing mother’s comfort. This often includes techniques such as massage, acupressure, counter-pressure practices and suggesting position changes. Additionally, my training in Optimal Maternal Positioning equips me with knowledge about optimising the baby’s birthing path through movement and exercises.

If you are birthing in a hospital, this usually brings about some level of navigating policies or intervention suggestions. Although my role as a birth doula does not include making decisions for the birthing parents, I help in the decision-making process. It is incredibly important that couples do not hand their power over to me either; the control of the decision is entirely in their hands. This is where empowerment is born.

I prioritise the mother’s well-being by ensuring she has access to food and drink and encouraging regular toilet trips. Not only is the toilet a great place to advance progress, but it’s also important to have an empty bladder to avoid obstruction of the baby moving down the birth path. This care allows the birth partner to remain close to the birthing mother, fostering an environment of love, support, and safety. Recognising the intensity of the birthing process for the partner, I recommend they take breaks. Having a Birth Doula enables the partner to take care of their own well-being too, confident that the birth mother is receiving ongoing support.

If this resonates with the support you desire during childbirth, feel free to contact me, and we can schedule a meeting to see if I would be the right inclusion to your birth team. As I exclusively work with one family at a time, reaching out early is recommended to secure availability.

“Simone is an incredible Doula. I found her passion for birth and supporting women apparent from the moment we met. Having Simone’s calm and gentle presence in my birth space truly helped evoke the peaceful atmosphere I wanted. She did everything in her power to support myself, my partner, and our birthing preferences throughout our birth first experience. We faced unexpected challenges along the way and I felt a strong sense of ease being able to turn to Simone for help and advice. Simone is a beautiful soul who put so much love and care into her role as our doula and I cannot thank her enough. I wish we could have kept her forever and now recommend Simone to all my friends!”

FAQs

Wouldn't my birth partner feel like an extra wheel with a Birth Doula present?

Deciding on a doula to help you and your partner is a decision you will not regret. Far from replacing your partner, a doula will help guide them to be the most supportive, confident, and connected partner they can be.

What role would my partner play if I have a birth doula?

Often the woman’s birth partner will worry that if the couple hire a doula they will be left out. However, in our experience, doulas can be a fantastic resource for your birth partner as well. They can support and guide your partner offering them knowledge, information and tools to help you during your labour.

Would I be in contact with you during pregnancy leading up to birth?

Absolutely! We will meet in person before 38 weeks, once if you’ve done a Hypnobirthing class with me or twice if you haven’t. Between then and your beautiful birthing day, you can keep in touch with me as often as you like via text or calls.

When are you on call?

I’m on call from 38 weeks, 24 hours 7 days a week!

When do I call you?

Ideally when you in active labour (we’ll go through what this look and feel like) but you can call when you feel like you’d like my support.

Do you support in my home or just at the hospital?

Ideally, I’ll support you in your home first. It’s common for couples to head to the hospital too early, especially first labours, so I can help you feel more comfortable at home for longer.

Do you support Homebirths?

Absolutely! I work alongside your private midwife as part of your birth team. I birthed my own daughter at home so I’ve also got experience and wisdom in homebirth.
